A “Last-Minute Job Search Seminar for International Students” was held in January and March, 2019, with the purpose of introducing and reinforcing technical matters in job hunting as required by international students seeking jobs in Japan. Specifically, the students completed a preparedness check sheet and were interviewed first. The participants were then divided into two courses: an introductory course for those at the preparatory stage of a job search, and a practical course for those who have made some progress. In each course, self-analysis, interview preparation, group discussion practice, Business Japanese, and other relevant subjects were instructed or organized. Considering that the first impression is also important, since students are selected from among many applicants, a practical lecture was given, to show how an employer’s impression will change depending on a candidate’s posture, attitude, appearance, and facial expression, by photographing and visualizing, and how to make a good first impression that conveys their personality.
The January seminar had 29 students from five consortium universities, while the March seminar was joined by 16 participants from the same five universities. The international students gave favorable evaluations about the setting up of the two courses (introductory and practical) and making time for the participants in both courses to get together. In addition, the job experience reports submitted by the international students provided unique insights. They favorably evaluated the seminar, saying that it was satisfactory since visualizing the differences in first impressions helped them to properly recognize its importance.
